Sharks sink Lions to second defeat – SABC News

The Lions suffered their second consecutive defeat in the Currie Cup going down 30-28 to the Sharks at Ellis Park in Johannesburg. The Sharks followed the same standard they set last week against the Free State Cheetahs where they showed incredible composure in the face of huge pressure to win.

The Lions were desperate to get back to winning ways following their loss to the Blue Bulls last weekend. However they found themselves on the backfoot for most of the first half.

Although they took the early lead through a try by Shaun Reynolds, they soon found themselves trailing.

A Sanele Nohamba penalty in the seventh minute reduced the deficit, but it was a Jeremy Ward converted try eight minutes later that saw the Durban franchise take a 10-3 lead.

The Sharks maintained their dominance over the home team as they went over the white-wash in the 21st minute through Nohamba for a converted try.

Despite a poor first half, the Lions managed to crawl back into the game as Tyrone Green scored the second try for the hosts five minutes into the second half.

The scores were leveled in the 62nd minute when Reynolds scored his second try of the day with Sharks seemingly struggling in this period. However they soon found themselves chasing the game as Ward went over for the Sharks third try for a 30-23 lead.

Marnus Schoeman gave the Lions some hope of a comeback when he forced himself over the line with six minutes remaining, but it was not enough to stop the Sharks from securing their second successive win.
