Atalanta are aiming for a crucial victory to all but secure their place in the playoff round of the Champions League as they host struggling Sturm Graz at the Gewiss Stadium on Tuesday, January 21, 2025. Africa Football editor Bill Eshun looks into the upcoming match.

Key Facts

  • Atalanta are winless in their last five games across all competitions.
  • Sturm Graz have won just one of their last five matches.

For Atalanta, reaching at least the playoff round remains their top priority. While a place in the automatic top eight may seem out of reach, their upcoming game against Sturm Graz provides the Italian side with an opportunity to strengthen their case for progression.

However, Atalanta’s recent form has been far from inspiring, as they have failed to secure a win in their last five matches across all competitions.

Although Sturm Graz have been slightly better, managing one win in five games, their Champions League campaign has been largely disappointing. With just one victory in six matches, they are on the verge of elimination, especially if they fail to secure a win against Atalanta.

Another Setback for Sulemana

Ghanaian midfielder Ibrahim Sulemana was not registered for the first round of matches at Atalanta due to injury, and it is almost certain that he will miss this encounter as well.

The 21-year-old has struggled for playing time since joining Atalanta in the summer, making just three Serie A appearances and totaling a mere 30 minutes on the pitch.

This situation is a major concern, and Ghanaians will be hoping he gets more opportunities in the near future.

The Odds

Atalanta are heavy favorites for this clash, with their odds currently priced at 1.21 according to 1xBet. Sturm Graz’s chances of victory are rated at 15.50, while a draw is priced at 7.70.

Prediction

Despite Atalanta’s poor recent form, they are up against a team considered one of the minnows in the competition. With the quality Atalanta possess, expectations are high for a convincing victory.

Predicted Scoreline: Atalanta 3-0 Sturm Graz
