Monaco are determined to solidify their position in the race for the 2025/26 UEFA Champions League as they head to Stade de la Mosson to face Montpellier in Ligue 1 on Friday, January 17, 2025. Africa Football’s editor Bill Eshun looks into upcoming clash.

Key Stats:

  • Montpellier have managed just one win in their last 13 games.
  • Monaco have failed to win five of their last six matches.

Despite their strong standing in the league, Monaco have struggled to find consistency, often relying on individual moments of brilliance to salvage results. Their recent 2-2 draw against Nantes came courtesy of a late goal from defender Mohammed Salisu, highlighting their inability to close out games effectively.

Monaco’s form across their last 10 matches in all competitions is underwhelming, with only three victories to show for their efforts. Their away form in Ligue 1 has also been inconsistent, yielding just two wins in six outings.

However, the visitors will take some comfort in Montpellier’s dire state. The hosts are enduring a nightmare season, with just one win in their last 10 matches across all competitions, making them firm candidates for relegation.

Salisu to Shine Again?

Mohammed Salisu has been a defensive stalwart for Monaco this season. He ranks third in the squad for clearances (40) and is among the top 10 for tackles and interceptions combined. Yet it was his attacking contribution that grabbed headlines in the last match, as his late equalizer against Nantes salvaged a vital point.

Monaco will once again look to Salisu for leadership at the back, and his newfound scoring touch could make a difference in a tight encounter.

Betting Odds

According to 1xBet, Montpellier are heavy underdogs with odds of 5.12, while Monaco are clear favorites at 1.67. The odds for a draw stand at 4.55.

Prediction

Montpellier’s dismal form and lack of confidence make them likely candidates to falter against a Monaco side that, despite their own struggles, boast superior quality. Playing at home is unlikely to be enough to save Montpellier from another defeat.

Predicted Scoreline: Montpellier 1-2 Monaco
