Rayo Vallecano have emerged as surprise contenders for a top-four spot this season and will be looking to strengthen their position as they host a struggling Valladolid on Friday February 8. Africa Football editor Bill Eshun looks into the upcoming match and provides his prediction and betting tips.

Key Facts

 • Vallecano have earned the second-most points in the last five league games.

 • Valladolid have lost four of their last five matches.

After narrowly avoiding relegation last season, Rayo Vallecano have significantly improved and positioned themselves in the race for a top-four finish. They currently sit sixth, occupying a Europa Conference League spot.

However, they are nine points adrift of the top four and will need to be more consistent in the coming weeks. Facing Valladolid presents a great opportunity to gain ground.

The visitors remain rock bottom of the league, with just 15 points from 22 games, and have managed only one away win all season.

Two Ghanaian Defenders Go Head-to-Head

For Rayo Vallecano, Abdul Mumin has been a defensive stalwart. He leads the division in blocks (35) and ranks third in clearances (116), statistics that will certainly impress Black Stars coach Otto Addo.

On the other hand, Joseph Aidoo recently joined Valladolid on loan after struggling for game time at Celta Vigo, partly due to injuries—the most significant of which he sustained while on international duty with the Black Stars in 2023.

At the moment, Mumin is the more highly rated of the two, but Aidoo has the potential to prove himself if given a consistent run of games.

The Odds

According to 1xBet, Rayo are currently priced at 1.51 to win, while Valladolid are heavy underdogs at 7.70. A draw stands at 4.46.

Prediction

This should be a straightforward match for Rayo, who have been in strong form throughout the season, while Valladolid continue to struggle.

Predicted Scoreline: Rayo Vallecano 1-0 Valladolid
